Our Journey

From a small group of courageous women to Ethiopia’s leading voice for sex worker rights

Nikat Charitable Association is the only sex worker-led organization in Ethiopia, established in April 2010 by women who transformed their personal experiences into a movement for change.

How Nikat Was Born

In April 2010, a group of courageous women who had experienced the challenges of sex work firsthand came together with a shared vision: to create an organization that would advocate for the rights and dignity of sex workers in Ethiopia.

What began as informal support networks evolved into Nikat Charitable Association, Ethiopia’s first and only sex worker-led organization. The name “Nikat” embodies the spirit of rising up and standing together.

That same year, our groundbreaking work was recognized internationally when we received the prestigious 2010 Red Ribbon Award for outstanding community leadership in the HIV/AIDS response.
